A socio-economic evaluation of Material Science (MS) of JAERI was made. The goal was to reveal the emphasized basic research fields (EBRF) of MS and to observe its socio-economic networking. High ranked keywords for the former and the number of co-authored papers for the latter were used along with many MS related papers. The obtained results are: (1) The EBRF of MS of JAERI were typically represented by the keywords of ion irradiation, actinides, etc., i.e., those having a strong relation to the nuclear field. Regarding actinides, the socio-economic networking between JAERI and PS occurred at the growth rate of 3-4% per 25 years, but 8% during the past 5 years. This implies that the research cooperation between the two was markedly enhanced. (2) The EBRF of MS between JAERI and 5 selected research bodies (SRB) represented by Tokyo University was directly compared and revealed that only 7 keywords as typically represented by neutron and accelerators. After overlapping, JAERI and SRB seem to be raising the national standard level.

JAERI-Tech-2004-059.pdf:6.82MB

The Materials and Life Science Facility is being constructed as one of main facilities in the JAERI-KEK High-Intensity Proton Accelerator Project (J-PARC). Various experimental apparatuses will be installed in 1st and 2nd Experimental Halls in the facility building. Neutron and muon beams provided by the facility are to be utilized for experimental research. This manual provides facility-side information that is needed for designing and installing experimental apparatuses, and summarizes specifications of junction points between the facility-side and user-side as of June, 2004.

This report summarizes conceptual design study up to March, 2003, relevant to the Materials & Life Science Experimental Facility construction which is one of the major user facilities to be constructed under the J-PARC project of High Intensity Proton Accelerator. The first chapter corresponds to the design manual, and the followings stand for the technical parts giving the design principle and detailed results for the studies. As the project is evolving day by day, some of studies have been advanced since the moment of this summary in one hand, and some of parts are close to final stage of design. Including those, more comprehensive and updated version of the technical designs are to be reported accordingly.

The JAERI and the KEK are jointly on the way of constructing facilities under the High-Intensity Proton Accelerator Project (J-PARC). The Materials and Life Science Facility is one of major facilities comprising a 1MW pulsed neutron source (JSNS). The neutrons are to be utilized for advanced researches in fields of materials and life science, and so on. In designing helium-vessel, it is important to assure structural integrity of the helium-vessel against earthquakes. It is also important to manufacture accurately neutron view ports. In-vessel components need to be replaced by remote handling after a certain period of operation due to radiation damages. To make the replacement steadily and easily, the helium-vessel has to provide suitable support, positioning and sealing structures. This report describes bases and conditions for deigning the helium-vessel, and summarizes basic structural specifications of the helium-vessel which are determined with structure strength and temperature analyses.

Basic design of shield blocks for a spallation neutron source under the high-intensity proton accelerator project

Yoshida, Katsuhiko*; Maekawa, Fujio; Takada, Hiroshi

JAERI-Tech 2003-019, 52 Pages, 2003/03

JAERI-Tech-2003-019.pdf:2.89MB

Under the JAERI-KEK High-Intensity Proton Accelerator Project (J-PARC), a spallation neutron source driven by a 3 GeV-1MW proton beam is planed to be constructed as a main part of the Materials and Life Science Facility. Overall dimensions of a biological shield of the neutron source had been determined by evaluation of shielding performance by Monte Carlo calculations. This report describes results of design studies on an optimum dividing scheme in terms of cost and treatment and mechanical strength of shield blocks for the biological shield. As for mechanical strength, it was studied whether the shield blocks would be stable, fall down or move to a horizontal direction in case of an earthquake of seismic intensity of 5.5 (250 Gal) as an abnormal load. For ceiling shielding blocks being supported by both ends of the long blocks, maximum bending moment and an amount of maximum deflection of their center were evaluated.
